Interpreting Visual Culture
Art can also be revealed through cultural background information. Like in this passage, the author illustrates the distinction between two subjects that is denotation and connotation and the use of different language to represent a certain culture. The artist also has used painting to describe the African American culture and how it has made an influence in the surrounding. This shows how art can make changes in the society either negative or positive hence conflict the big idea.
In the magazine cover, culture has been used to describe and illustrate the whole big ideas. The artist is describing the denoted image of the women and everything about them. There is also the use of cultural language which can describe who they are for example “Booty Camp”. The connoted image of the women gives an expression of who they are and what they do. Their aggressive attire is symbolic rather than practical. Finally cultural interpretation is affecting children as per the Tee-shirts, Teddy Bears, Cereals and Boxes denotations and connotations.
